Caelen Johnson Intern Blog HEROCaelen Johnson, Cayman Enterprise City's 2024 Summer Intern

How did you learn about the Enterprise Cayman Internship programme, and why did you decide to apply?

I first learned about the Enterprise Cayman Internship Programme through social media and UCCI. Cayman Enterprise City (CEC) is well known for hosting numerous community events, some of which are held in partnership with UCCI. Through these avenues, I became aware of CEC's non-profit initiative, Enterprise Cayman, and their significant involvement in the community. This played a major role in my decision to apply, along with my understanding that CEC would provide valuable hands-on experience in marketing.

What were your key responsibilities as a marketing intern?

As a marketing intern, my role was to support the marketing team with various tasks such as content creation, market research, proofreading, and editing and updating CEC webpages through HubSpot. I also created external communication material such as flyers, brochures, social media posts and supported the marketing team in preparing for events such as ‘Tech Talks’ and ‘CyberSandbox’.

Do you feel like this internship will help you further your career?

Absolutely! Throughout my internship, I was able to develop new skills, enhance my existing ones, and deepen my understanding of marketing, all of which will undoubtedly make me more competitive in my career.

Being able to gain experience in the various areas of marketing, such as content creation, event organising, and market research, provided me with experience that has broadened my perspective on the industry and prepared me for the future.

What was it like working with the Cayman Enterprise City team?

Working with the CEC team was a great experience. Working alongside such a knowledgeable and experienced team allowed me to gain valuable insights and identify areas for personal and professional growth. The supportive environment made it easy for me to feel comfortable and to seek help and ask questions whenever I needed to. I also became more outgoing thanks to the encouragement from some of my colleagues, as I typically consider myself introverted. As a result, I was able to connect with more individuals and create relationships. This newfound confidence will help me to advance in my career, as marketing involves a lot of communication and networking.

Do you think that Cayman Enterprise City is providing opportunities for Cayman’s Youth?

Yes, CEC, through Enterprise Cayman, provides valuable opportunities for Cayman’s youth. The Enterprise Cayman Internship Programme gives young Caymanians and residents the chance to explore career opportunities with over 350 international companies in the Special Economic Zone. Monthly community initiatives like ‘CyberSandbox’ and ‘Tech Talks’ offer educational and networking opportunities. Additionally, initiatives like the ‘Business Design Competition’ and ‘Launch Labs Studios’ support entrepreneurship and business growth.

How was your overall experience?

My internship was incredibly enriching, exposing me to new opportunities and hands-on experience with marketing tools like Canva and HubSpot. I expanded my skill set, discovered new areas of marketing, and enjoyed memorable moments, from watching a Caymanian athlete compete in the Olympics to networking at CEC’s summer social. Connecting with other interns at CEC’s coffee morning was another highlight, making the experience even more rewarding.

I highly recommend taking advantage of the Enterprise Cayman Internship Programme if you are interested in career development. This programme provides various opportunities to build a strong professional network, which can open doors to future career opportunities.
